Wyandotte County Lake Park
Kansas City, KS
My parents Judy and Bernard Slevinske donated my deceased brother's memorial flag to the Schlagle Library. The flag was first raised at 11:30 a.m. on September 14, 2001, the National Day of Rememberance for the victims of the Attack on America on September 11 and in remembrance of my brother Dennis.
My brother served in the Army during the Vietnam War, my father served as a radio operator in Europe during World War II, and I served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
My family often visited Wyandotte County Lake Park while I was growing up. In our late teens, my brother and I often went to the park for picnics and socializing with our friends. The park holds many memories for me and my family, and I'm happy and proud that the flag is flying there.
Judy and Bernard Slevinske raise the flag on September 23, 2001, to full-staff as declared by President Bush following 11 days of mourning.
During a visit to
Kansas City in early November, 2001, I visited the Schlagle Library.
I was impressed by the beautiful building and the excellent educational
facilities. As I was leaving, Anne Miller asked if I'd like to
help lower the flag for the day, and I jumped at the chance. As
we folded the flag, I felt a sense of comfort and peace.
