iBeat Kit
4/25/08 - I saw a post on ThumperTalk about the iBeat fuel injection tuning kit and I ordered one from Bill's Motorcycle Plus (888-806-1153) <bmp@teleport.com>. The kit came today: what next?
A booklet (in Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese):
Introduction: safety procedures, prohibited acts, precautions, copyright, use restrictions, limited warranty, and liability notes.
Product Specifications
Install and Uninstall Procedures
Starting the Software
Failure Help
Contact Information
The DVD contains the iBeat software and Operation Manual (50 pages, pdf).
The communication cable has a serial connector on one end and a connector that plugs into the vehicle's diagnostic connector (located behind the headlight on the '08 TE610). There is a small black box in-line in the cable.
I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.5 and BootCamp with Windows XP SP2 installed. I plan to install the iBeat software on my MBP and will provide information about my tuning experiences on this page. Stay Tuned!
4/27/08 - I read the iBeat Diagnostic Tool (IDT) Operation Manual, all 50 pages, before starting to use the IDT software. Then I read it again. I am impressed with how much you can find out about the ECU and the sensors that feed it (13 or so), how you can easily generate maintenance logs, and how you can check for error conditions. BUT, I'm NOT impressed with the changes you can make, which are exactly four. That's right, four. You can set the mv level for the throttle position sensor (TPS). You can set three feedback adjustment values which relate to three throttle positions. You can't see or change anything to do with the actual ignition map, like change the shape of a curve. Although I don't know anything about fuel injection and ignition mapping besides the most basic of principles of how they work, I would have expected to be able to make more changes than I see in IDT. But let's get back to the business at hand - installing and using IDT.
I installed the IDT application from the DVD. Then I installed the driver for a Keyspan USB/serial adapter (USA-19H) on my MBP, configured the communication port, plugged the Keyspan adapter into a USB port on my MBP, plugged the iBeat communication cable into the Keyspan adapter and the TE diagnostic connector, turned on the ignition key, and started IDT. It tried to communicate then stopped with an error message. After checking everything twice and concluding that it was either right or it was beyond me to detect the problem, I started IDT again. Again, it stopped with an error message. After thinking a bit, I decided that the red button on the handlebar switch needed to be out, and after releasing it, I re-seated the diagnostic connector and restarted IDT. Success - the screen came alive with information about my TE. I don't know if it was the red button out or the connector reseat that fixed it; I'll recheck on my next session.
I ran through all the screens staring at the information provided, but otherwise made no changes. Finally, I decided to check the TPS. The reading was incorrect, so I changed it from 986 to 977 mv, all according to the instructions in the manual. Although I don't have access to a service manual for details about the process, I feel that what I did was correct. I'll pay real close attention to engine response the next time I ride my TE.
Both the IDT Operation Manual and the IDT application often remind you that you should read the service manual before making any changes to the parameters. I have repeatedly tried to get a 2008 TE610 Service Manual, but so far, have been unsuccessful. I have the '07 version, which pretty much covers everything on the '08 TE except fuel injection. Until I get an '08 service manual, I won't be making any more changes with IDT.
Well, that's it for now. So far, I like what I bought, despite my disappointment with how many 'things' I can change. I may find that what is there is all that is needed. I plan to study the various FI and iBeat posts on ThumperTalk and ADVrider and I'll try again to get a service manual to find out about FI tuning. Until then, the iBeat goes on.....
