Duncan Hill Dual-Sport Loop

The Duncan Hill Dual-Sport Loop starts and ends at the Taylor Park Trading Post. The loop goes south to Duncan Hill and returns to the Trading Post. The loop is a Dual-Sport ride consisting of easy roads. Some roads are rocky, but not all that hard to ride. The loop is between 30 and 60 miles long, depending on rider choice. There is no gas available on the loop.

Most of the roads are shown on Trails Illustrated maps 129 and 130 and also the USFS Gunnison Basin Area Visitors Map. Some of the roads are not shown on the maps.

A note on nomenclature: Tr - trail; Cr - creek; FTnnn - USFS system trail; FRnnn - USFS system road; other roads and highways are state or county, as noted.

In the directions below, the route generally follows unnumbered dirt roads.

Park at the Taylor Park Trading Post.

0.00    Start at Taylor Park Trading Post. Ride out from the main parking lot.

0.08    Turn left at the STOP sign. Ride to Tincup.

7.54   Ride straight thru 4-way intersection.

7.82    Ignore Tincup Cemetery turnoff on the left.

7.91    Turn left at dark post.

8.50    Ignore unmarked right turn.

9.68    Turn left to explore the mine. Do not ride the steep road on the east side of the ridge; it is very steep and rocky. You'll know it when you see it.

After exploring the mine, return to the main road (at the 9.68 intersection), turn left and continue riding south.

Begin random wandering.

Here you can begin to explore the main and side roads, looking at cabins, mines, and prospects (small and large holes in the ground). You may ride as much as 20 miles by the time you exhaust all side roads on Duncan Hill. All side roads either dead-end, loop back, or exit to Cumberland Pass Rd (except for the steep road noted earlier). By a process of elimination, you'll end up on Cumberland Pass Rd. Turn left and ride up to Cumberland Pass. After enjoying the view, return to Tincup and the Trading Post via Cumberland Pass Rd, about 16 miles. Total miles between 30 and 60.

End of the ride.
