The Wellsville South area consists of BLM land south and west of Wellsville. There are two longer BLM motorized routes and several spurs plus a county road and spurs. The area is often rideable in winter because it doesn't get much snow.

The BLM motorized routes make up two exploration legs, one very short and the other considerably longer. The spurs are located throughout the area. The routes are mostly easy dirt roads, with a few hills to make things interesting. The total riding mileage is about 12 miles (one-way), so all routes can easily be ridden in a day.

The map clip on the right --->  shows the various routes and spurs. Click the map to see a larger jpg version showing the entire area (print for reference).

Click pdf map to view or right-click to save a pdf map of the area for printing. The pdf version is higher quality than the jpg version.

DIRECTIONS: From Salida, drive east on Highway 50 about 3.5 miles to Wellsville. Turn right onto BLM road #5927A to access two short BLM roads. To access the longer, more interesting roads, drive about one mile further east on Highway 50 to the Box Canyon turnoff. Turn right and drive into the Box Canyon. Follow the map for an adventure.

View of the open east face of the mine. Yes, we were on top. There is an access road winding up the face of the ridge, but it is closed to entry about three turns up. We rode up the backside, following a power line service road, open to motorized use, as shown on the map.
